DAY 2, July 10, 2012: Dayville to Prairie City

On the road early to beat the heat to Prairie City

Second breakfast in Mt Vernon

The Old West Scenic Bikeway shares the route with the TransAm Bike Trail between Dayville and Austin Junction, so we were not surprised when we were hailed by a half dozen bicycle tourists congregating outside a cafe as we passed through the town of John Day. We stopped to share stories and learned that, although they were all going the same direction, they had not known each other previously until developing a friendship on the road. We added ourselves to their group, a loose pace line of touring bicycles traveling east, until a flat tire forced us off just 8 miles short of Prairie City.

Mike wipes sweat from his eyes before examining his flat tire.

A goat head thorn, probably from a Bike Unfriendly place, produced a dissecting aneuysm in Mike's sidewall.

Glad to make it into Prairie City

Chilling out at the Oxbow Saloon

Mike chatted with a guy walking across America with a goat to raise money for an African orphanage. We did not find signage for Goat Friendly businesses, probably because of the goat's tendency to eat the decorative plantings outside of these businesses. We also found the goat a lot less approachable than cycle tourists.

Members of the Santiam Spokes bicycle club ride through Prairie City on a beer run

Starting in on our first beer at the Prairie City campground, which we shared with the friendly members of the Santiam Spokes Bicycle Clubdoing the "Ochoco Challenge2012" . This proved to be the first of four campsites we shared with them.
